: Wealth in Waste :: SEMINAR JANUARY 2006 (update)
Raising environmental awareness through HOPE
Whether you are visiting Kalimpong as a tourist or on business, you will find that this quiet small hill station has its own charm and provides you with days of entertainment. Well known as one of the main centers of education, Kalimpong, in the district of Darjeeling, offers hotel and restaurant facilities as well as recreational areas, which you can enjoy at your own leisure. However, as with many towns in India, Kalimpong also faces its own problems, which arise through lack of education and general awareness.
With regard to environmental aspects, HOPE is currently in the process of introducing a variety of new projects to Kalimpong and its associated districts. Recently HOPE has initiated a new program with regard to the towns waste management. This project known as “wealth in waste” has already proven to be very successful. With the support of HORAK (hotel and restaurant association of Kalimpong), HOPE has been able to collect recyclable materials from around town, which are being sold to a proper recycling plant in Siliguri. With the profit made through the selling we envisage to supply Kalimpong town and nearby communities with rubbish bins which will be distributed along the streets for the collection of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste for proper disposal. The North Bengal Plastic Federation has kindly donated HOPE with 20 waste bins, which will be distributed initially along the main street of Kalimpong. Proper rubbish removal will improve the living conditions of the residents of Kalimpong and with the clean up of the town area we will be able to prevent the spread of health threatening diseases, enhance the towns attractiveness to visitors and its population as well as reduce the strain on the environment.
In association with this waste management program HOPE is planning to implement an ECO-school project through which we can raise people’s awareness. To introduce the education program to the schools HOPE has designed a drama on various environmental issues, which will be displayed in supporting school communities. Besides this HOPE envisages to put into operation environmental clubs within the schools. These clubs will be actively involved in the recycling of school garbage, making recycled paper products such as greeting cards, files paper toys etc, setting up compost pits, planting trees and shrubs and taking general care of the school premises. All in all, the main objective of the environmental clubs is to raise special inspiration with a passion for looking after the global village and providing first hand leadership experience for the students. HOPE is also drawing up eco-codes to implement its objectives and to work efficiently through organised management and the involvement of the different schools.
