: ECO-SCHOOL PROJECT AT A GLANCE :-
This Eco-school project is a branch of the Snow View Eco-school project which was established in Nepal in 2003. With an excellent view of organised inbuilt inspiration for the students in the conservation of nature and ecology through leadership qualities, leadership and cooperation are its vision.
The project is totally run by the student executive body consisting of 10 members and the Principal as the Chairman.
The project involves a variety of workshops and campaigns on garbage management, water sanitation, eco-cultural programs, conservation and competitions between various school members.
Background:
Recent studies conducted through interviews with a number of different schools have shown that environmental education is only to a limit taught at primary and secondary level.
Kalimpong needs to raise its environmental awareness with regard to polluting the town, roads, rivers and the surrounding countryside.
Pollution is mainly caused by the inappropriate way of dumping household and business refuse.
Other associated environmental issues are erosion of the land, landslides as an immediate secondary cause, unsafe drinking water and inadequate hygiene.
Vision of this project:
To raise the environmental awareness of the community, resulting in the improvement of the living conditions long term, by upgrading the environment with regard to pollution caused by waste.
Objectives:
- To implement environmental education programs at all school levels to inspire students to care for their environment
- To train teachers and volunteers in environmental issues with the view on effective teaching practices.
- To encourage waste separation (biodegradable and non-biodegradable) in the communities and promote bin-culture.
- To establish recycle centers and information centers on recyclable materials
- To plant native trees and shrubs in erosion zones.
- To establish eco-groups within the schools to promote environmental awareness.
- To establish links with other eco-groups in different countries to share ideas and experiences and with the view of possible future exchange programs.
- To implement self-sustaining projects in the schools such as paper recycling and compost production.
- To improve sanitation and promote safe drinking water.
How we envisage the implementation of this program:
With the help of the municipality, school community members and volunteers we will address the main issues. HOPE members will initiate the ECO-school project through introducing themselves to the school principal with an outline of the program.
Those schools that are interested in participating in this project will be responsible for providing time to implement the program, encouraging their members of staff to participate and providing resources where available.
HOPE will set up training seminars for teachers and volunteers. This will involve workshops on how to conduct practical tasks, teaching new skills in line with the ECO-project and providing samples of resources.
HOPE members specialized in this ECO-school project will provide ongoing support to the schools and teachers through follow up visits and assistance with any problems.
